Class Descriptions

Family Classes

This is the essential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend from birth through age six through all the song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers – grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading young ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, charting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers – parents, grandparents, nanny – can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience.

Babies Classes

Every child's development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together® offers two options for babies. Babies eight months and younger at the time of registration may attend a Mixed Ages Class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older brother or sister. Babies may also take the special "Babies Class" offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together®. (This class cannot be repeated.) The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in babies. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby.

Music Together Big Kids®

Your 5, 6, or 7-year-old is developing quickly and exploring new activities, mastering new skills, and gaining independence. As a parent, you may be making choices about extracurricular activities that complement their new school experiences and support their growth—in music and in life. The Music Together Big Kids® program helps your child take the next step in music development by blending the elements of Music Together that parents and children love with new activities, skills, and challenges that are developmentally appropriate for 5 through 7 year-old children. Please read about the policies of Music Together Big Kids®

During class, children learn musical skills and appreciation through a special Music Together curriculum developed just for 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds. Every family enrolled in class receives a Music Together Big Kids edition songbook with activities specially created for 5–7-year-olds, two copies of the recording, and weekly Home Play activity pages.

Music Together Within Therapy®

This service is facilitated by a board certified music therapist (MT-BC) who utilizes the innovative Music Together® music and materials. If you are interested in individual music therapy sessions using the Music Together® materials, please register for a free screening here.

Tempo! is also offering classes designed for families with children with special needs who feel they need more support in a smaller class environment. These classes will be tailored to the specific therapeutic needs (physical, emotional, cognitive, and social) of each child. Also, contrary to typical Music Together® classes, children over the age of 6 are welcome.

Music Together® in School

Music Together® in School also offers classes designed for preschool settings: Weekly Music Together® Preschool classes are 30-45 minutes long and include an artistically conceived flow of songs, nursery rhymes, instrumental jam sessions, fingerplays, and movement activities. The combination and types of activities are research-based and support children’s developing competence in tonality and rhythm.

In addition, activities evolve from the child’s world and include vocal play, animal sounds, rhythm play, language play, and a good bit of genuine, silly fun. Classes are taught by a registered Music Together® teacher who is trained in music development and skilled in leading participatory music activity. Children “bring the music home” to their parents through the family CD and songbook.

If you are interested in bringing Music Together® to your preschool, please contact us.

Intergenerational Classes

Across the country and abroad, in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and senior residences, elders are forming bonds with young families through Music Together®. Typically, area Music Together® teachers arrange to hold a parent-child class in a facility, with the express purpose of sharing music with the elders. Our Media and Reading classes are designated Intergenerational classes.

Birthday Parties

Our parties guarantee 30 minutes of music with props such as scarves, rhythm sticks, bells, eggs shakers and various instruments for an instrumental jam session. We typically schedule 45 minutes of entertainment but it is truly dependent upon the ages of the children, the desire of the client and the schedule set by the place of the celebration. Outreach Programs

Tempo! participates in Music Together® outreach programs in the community, in preschools, community centers, and other locations in the community. Many of these programs are grant funded. Feel free to contact us for more information on local outreach programs.

A word about inclusion . . .

All of our Music Together® classes are inclusion classes, meaning there may be families attending with a child with special needs in any of our classes. We want our classes to be fun and accessible to all families. This allows all families to attend classes together and for siblings to interact in a playful, musical environment. We welcome helpers and aides to attend and support families as well. We find that typically developing children have fun engaging with all children in the class and have received positive feedback from many families about our inclusion model. If at any point it is determined that the class is not a right fit for a child or if there are safety concerns, we may provide alternate options. This does not mean that Music Together® is not a good fit overall, and often children are able to rejoin the class. If at any point you have questions about our inclusive policies, please contact us!
